Occupational therapy (OT) helps individuals develop, recover, or maintain daily living and work skills through therapeutic activities. It is particularly beneficial for children with developmental disorders, sensory processing difficulties, or physical disabilities, as well as adults recovering from injuries or neurological conditions.
Occupational therapists focus on improving fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, sensory integration, and self-care abilities. Therapy sessions may include exercises to enhance handwriting, dressing, eating, and other activities of daily living (ADLs). Sensory integration therapy, a component of OT, helps individuals with sensory processing disorders by exposing them to controlled sensory stimuli.
OT also plays a crucial role in enhancing cognitive skills, emotional regulation, and social participation. Therapy can take place in schools, clinics, or home settings, depending on the individual's needs. Adaptive tools, such as modified utensils, weighted vests, and sensory-friendly classroom materials, are often used to support therapy goals.
Collaboration between occupational therapists, educators, and families ensures that therapy interventions are effectively integrated into daily routines. By improving functional independence, occupational therapy empowers individuals to participate more actively in school, work, and social environments.
